Meika Stevens became worried when her husband, Michael, didn’t come home at the time he usually did, so she knew something was wrong. She began pacing the floor and flexing her fingers several times. She finally settled down and wrote to her e-mail buddy,Tracy, but she didn’t hear back from her like she normally did, so she started worrying more. She didn’t know what to think or do. Her husband and Tracy were both missing.
Finally, she decided to call Detective Mallory to see if he could locate Michael and Tracy. Meika lifted up the receiver and dialed Detective Mallory. “My name is Meika Stevens. My husband, Michael, didn’t come home yesterday. Can you help me?”
“Where do you live?” Detective Mallory asked.
Meika gave him the address and he told her he would be over in a half hour. The doorbell rang and Meika answered it.
“I’m Detective Mallory.”
“Please come in. I hope you can find what happened to my husband. Also, my friend, Tracy, whom I started writing to on the Internet didn’t respond to me like she normally did. I think something happened to her, too.”
Tracy. You didn’t mention her name when you called.”
“I realize that. Tracy is someone I met on the Internet. I wrote to her about her and her husband getting together with Michael and me, but I haven’t heard back from her. We always responded to each other right away.”
“Tell me what happened.”
“A week after I got my computer, I got something published on the Internet. This helped me to have more things published and have my own site, which is Detective Fiction.”
“You like to write Detective Fiction stories?”
“Sure. I think it’s exciting to solve cases.”
“It can be at times. You never know what kind of case you will be working on or how it will be solved.”
“That’s true.”
“Tell me what happened
Tracy saw some of my published works on the Internet and began to write to me. I have her first e-mail message.”
Meika showed Detective Mallory the letter. He read it aloud. “I saw the stories on your site. My name is Tracy Stevens. I was just wondering if we were related. I’m a freelance writer, too. I have a mystery site. My site is similar to yours. I’d like to meet you sometime. Here is my address. Where do you live? Send me a message as soon as you can. It would be neat if we were related. I’m looking forward to hearing from you, Tracy Stevens.”
“Didn’t you say your last name was Stevens?” Detective Mallory asked.
“Yes, I did. That’s why I wanted to correspond with Tracy. I thought we might be related to
Michael since his last name is Stevens. When Michael came home from work two days ago, I told him I was on the Internet and came in contact with someone named Tracy Stevens. I told him that Tracy wondered if we were related. After that, I asked him if he knew someone named Tracy Stevens.”
“What did he say?” Detective Mallory asked.
“He told me no and that I was to forget about her and not to write to her again because he didn’t want me going out with some stranger I met on the Internet. During supper, I asked Michael why I couldn’t write to her. He told me to forget her and make a new friend in person.”
“I see. Have you tried to make contact with her again,” Detective Mallory asked.
“Yes. On Friday, Michael was going to be out of town, so I knew I could send Tracy an e-mail letter. I wanted to meet Tracy for lunch somewhere and visit. However, Tracy wrote and told me that she couldn’t meet with me.”
“Do you know why she couldn’t meet with you?”
“No. I thought I had done something wrong, so I wrote back to Tracy and asked her if I had said something to upset her. Tracy wrote back and said that she couldn’t meet with me because her husband didn’t want her to go out with strangers. I wrote back and suggested that our husbands meet with us. Tracy wrote back and said she would talk to her husband. I waited for Tracy’s response and didn’t hear from her.
The next day, I still didn’t hear from Tracy. I began getting worried about Tracy and wondered what had happened, so I decided to write again. However, I still didn’t hear anything from Tracy. That’s when I decided to call you.”
“Take my advice. Don’t try to contact Tracy again. Let me do it. I believe I know what is happening here. I’ll be in touch with you when I find out something.”
“Thanks for helping me.”
Detective Mallory left, and Meika started writing her mystery book until she heard from him. Later that night, Detective Mallory stopped by Meika’s house and told her what he found out. He said that Michael had been going to Tracy’s house on the weekends because he had married her a few months ago. He located Michael and arrested him. Meika couldn’t believe what Detective Mallory told her, but she knew he was right. After that, Meika didn’t want to communicate with Tracy because of the emotional pain that would result. Meika filed for divorce and started her life as a single person. She didn’t want to meet anyone else at that time, especially on the Internet or attempt to meet them in person.
